The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 placed the University of Edinburgh as one of Scotland's leading research institutions. The REF is the system used to assess the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEI). The results revealed that nearly 90 per cent of the University’s research activity is in the highest categories – 4 star and 3 star – which are classified respectively as ‘world leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’, a growth of 10 percentage points since the previous REF in 2014. Our REF success also illustrates the benefits to students of studying in the University’s world-class research-led teaching environment.
The Clinical Trials Programme is one of a suite of online courses offered by the Usher Institute of Population Health Sciences and Informatics. The Usher Institute is a centre of research and teaching in the Edinburgh Medical School department of Molecular, Genetic and Population Health Sciences.
Our Programme is uniquely placed to tap into the clinical trials expertise that exists in the Edinburgh Bioquarter, a leading global destination for healthcare delivery, groundbreaking medical research and life sciences innovation and entrepreneurship. We enjoy close links with clinical trials professionals in NHS Lothian, Edinburgh Clinical Research Facility and Edinburgh Clinical Trials.
Providing a top quality learning and teaching experience is something which the University values extremely highly. In Scotland we are fortunate to have the tried and tested Quality Enhancement Framework (QEF) in place which plays a very effective role in monitoring the quality of teaching in our universities. The University performed very strongly in the Enhancement-Led Institutional Review (ELIR) run by the Quality Assurance Agency, which appraises the quality of the student learning experience institution-wide. The experience which the University offers was highly praised as were some of the unique initiatives it has implemented to ensure that it provides an excellent learning and teaching experience.

After you graduate
Near the time of your graduation, you will be invited to join the Usher Institute Masters Alumni (UMA) network that seeks to explore a new way of engaging alumni that extends and champions the notion of life-long learning through collaboration between alumni, current students and staff. The UMA network hosts joint student, staff, and alumni events aimed at transferable ‘real world’ skills, such as dissertation publication workshops, soft skills on topics such as defeating imposter syndrome, and more.
