Teaching and assessment
The small number of students admitted to this course each year lends itself to a variety of teaching and assessment methods.
Assessment is continuous throughout the course, and small group and one-to-one teaching is featured particularly in relation to clinical work.
Traditional teaching methods such as lectures and seminars are used, with more innovative methods such as case-based, self-directed and student-led learning integrated throughout the programme.
Assessment methods
Combined assessment methods are employed throughout the course, including:
- Short answer tests
- Multiple-choice questions
- Case reports
- 360 degree feedback
- Work-based assessments
Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and Structured Clinical Operative Tests (SCOTs) are used to determine clinical ability and progress.
Students keep a logbook of clinical work which contributes to a personal portfolio and is assessed at the end of each semester.
There are examinations at the end of each semester which must be passed satisfactorily before any student is permitted to continue to the next phase of study.
