College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine

Staff scholarships

The College offers a small number of scholarships to staff wishing to study for part-time postgraduate qualifications relevant to their work.

Full details of programmes covered, award conditions and selection criteria are available on the Scholarships and Student Funding Service website:

Eligibility

Before applying for a staff scholarship, applicants should have received an offer of admission for part-time postgraduate study at the University of Edinburgh.

Details of how to apply for postgraduate admission can be found in the Postgraduate website.

Postgraduate application information

Applications must be fully supported by the relevant Head of School (or the College Registrar for staff in College level functions) who will require to complete the supporting statement section of the application.

Please note: this fund is unable to pay fees for clinically qualified training fellows except in exceptional cases and only where:

a) The fellowship has been defended personally by the applicant in external competition (ie, they did not simply apply for a CRF post on a funded grant);

b) The funder does not pay tuition fees.

In such cases, a preliminary enquiry should be made to the Dean of Postgraduate Research (CMVM).

Study at another institution

In exceptional circumstances, awards may be made for a programme of study within another higher educational institution.

Applicants wishing to undertake a programme of study elsewhere will need to provide confirmation from their Head of School that a comparable programme of study is not available at the University of Edinburgh.

Applying for the scheme

To apply,  download and complete the application form.

Applicants must submit a copy of the formal offer of admission for study at the University and a copy of their current contract of employment with their scholarship application.

The closing dates for applications are 31 January, 30 April and 31 July.

Completed applications should be emailed to:

Morag Sawkins, Postgraduate Finance Manager

morag.sawkins@ed.ac.uk

Notification of outcomes

The Staff Scholarship panel will convene within two weeks of the application closing dates and decisions will be communicated to applicants within one month of the deadline.

Conditions

The Staff Scholarships Scheme is both competitive and concessionary.

Funds are limited.  Therefore, the award of a scholarship within the College will be based on:

  • the development opportunity for the individual
  • that they are expected to compete their studies within the period of their employment
  • clear support from their supervisor
  • a demonstration of sustained benefit to the College post award.

The strength of submission will be further enhanced if the applicant is able to secure part funding from another source.

Change of employer

In the event that a member of staff leaves before the completion of a programme of study supported under this scheme, the staff member will be required to pay back the value of the scholarship for the period he/she is no longer employed by the University.
