Darwin scholarships to aid students

A new scholarships programme has been launched for overseas medical students.

The Charles Darwin Postgraduate Research Scholarships are available to students applying for a research degree within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh.

Up to 50 scholarships will be awarded for students beginning their studies in September 2011. Each award is worth between £5,000 and £25,000 per year.

Applicants must be liable to pay overseas tuition fees and must have already applied for admission for a postgraduate research degree.

The closing date for application is 31 March.

The scholarships are named after Charles Darwin, who studied at the University’s Medical School from 1825 to 1827.

Darwin’s encounters with teachers, academics and curators in and around Edinburgh formed the basis of his brilliant explorations in his later career as a naturalist.

The University of Edinburgh’s College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine has an internationally-leading reputation for excellence in research.

It has major strengths in regenerative medicine, neurosciences, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, reproductive sciences, genetics, molecular medicine, population health, oncology and infectious disease.
