Tissue Repair student Sophie Quick wins prize in MRC Max Perutz Science Writing Competition 2017
Congratulations to Sophie Quick for winning runner up prize in MRC Max Perutz Science Writing competition.
Sophie, who works at the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine, was a finalist with her essay entitled ‘Watering the strawberry fields of the mind’. The awards were announced on 19th October by the MRC Chairman and Chair of the judging panel, Donald Brydon CBE, alongside Director of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and fellow competition judge, Sir Hugh Pelham, and Professor Robin Perutz, son of the late Max Perutz. First prize went to MRC-funded PhD student Kirstin Leslie from the Institute of Health and Wellbeing, University of Glasgow.
Commenting on this year’s competition, Mr Brydon said: “Again young scientists have shown they can communicate their passion for science to a wide audience. The standard of entries was very high and the winner strikes just the right chord in tune with our increasingly data-driven world.”
The Max Perutz Writing Award is in its 20th year and encourages MRC-funded PhD students to communicate their work to a wider audience. Entrants are asked to explain why their research matters in just 800 words. Since the competition started in 1998, over 1,000 researchers have submitted entries and taken their first steps into science communication.
