International Molecular Pathology Symposium 2016
An exceptional event, the International Molecular Pathology Symposium (IMPS 2016) took place at the IGMM on May 31st 2016. Organised by the steering committee of the MRC-EPSRC Molecular Pathology Award to the Universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews, a capacity audience enjoyed outstanding talks from a range of local, national, and international speakers.
The symposium was opened by Professor Sir John Savill and keynote speaker Professor Sue Hill, Chief Scientific Officer for NHS England, who spoke on integrating genomics and the future of medicine. Professor Pancras Hogendoorn, University of Leiden, gave a highly entertaining keynote presentation on the molecular pathology on rare sarcomas. Further excellent keynote talks were presented by Professor Joakim Lundeberg, SciLifeLab Stockholm, who described remarkable spatial transcriptomics experiments combining the strengths of histological analysis and whole genome RNAseq and Dr. David Bentley, chief scientist for Illumina, whose talk entitled "genomes for medicine” gave a future vision of how genome sequencing has changed and will continue to change clinical practice in the coming decade .
One of the clinical delegates said, "this was an amazing meeting - it looked like you were staring into the future but realised it was happening today”.
