Applying

The timetables for 2018 are now closed.

The new timetables for 2019 open in March 2018.

Applications should be made at least six to eight months prior to the elective date, and for some specialities, even earlier.

The application form includes details of deadlines and other requirements.

Information on the Edinburgh Medical School teaching hospitals is available at:

www.nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk/goingtohospital/Locations/RIE

Please note that the electives at Belford Hospital in Fort William, Lochaber, Inverness-shire are not available for 2019 (attachments that have been confirmed for 2018 will still take place).

Electives are for a maximum period of four weeks of study, starting on the first Monday of each month.

Medical Elective students should be in their final or penultimate year of study of their medical degree course, as you need to have completed your clinical training before the start date of your elective period in any of the Edinburgh teaching hospitals.

All applications are processed by date of receipt when the new timetables for placements are available. Places are offered on first come first served basis. Receipt of an application form does not guarantee an offer of an elective placement.
