Edinburgh Local

Library

You can borrow books, explore our precious Collections or become a Friend of the Library.

The University Library

Our Main Library in George Square isn’t just for current staff and students, those living in the local community are welcome to use it too. People studying at our Centre for Open Learning can take advantage of our huge range of books, as can our former staff and students.

The Library is also open to staff and students from other universities and associated institutions. We have special arrangements with other bodies so that they, too, can use the Library including NHS Lothian, Members of the Scottish Parliament and the Church of Scotland.

Friends of the University Library

Friends of Edinburgh University Library was established some 50 years ago to play an active part in the work of the Library and the Collections. The Friends promote and celebrate the Library and its collections and, of course, are eligible to borrow books. They act as a channel for gifts of books and manuscripts to enhance the collections, sometimes contributing to the purchase of rare and valuable items which the Library could not otherwise acquire.

Membership of the Friends of Edinburgh University Library is open to anyone who would like to support the work of the Library.
