Dissent through Laughter: Translating the Offensive Voice

Dr Hephzibah Israel (University of Edinburgh)

Dr Israel's talk focused on contemporary literary writing by female Dalits in South India who use scatological registers of the Tamil language to powerfully describes horrific scenes  of Gender-Based Violence using black humour, obscenity and swearing.  What is the role of the ‘offensive’ in such translated literature and to what extent can the offensive voice be translated into  other languages to effectively express the challenging of marginality?
