Individual Differences, Collective Constructions: Emoting experiences of deportation through translation
Sharon Deane-Cox’s talk investigated the role of the translator as a secondary witness to French Holocaust survivors, paying particular attention to the identification and reconstruction of emotion in testimonial narratives. It reflected on the ethical issues that surround the translation process as a negotiation between translator and survivor, taking into consideration how the translation product might shape reader responses and understanding, and it also moved beyond the text to explore the role of publishers in the mediation of emotion in particular and testimony more broadly.
