Visiting Scholars

The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures is delighted to welcome visiting academic scholars. However, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to accept applications for academic year 2020/21. We will continue to assess the situation and invite applications for academic year 2021/22 if it is safe to do so. Note that this will not be before April 2021 - please check this page for further updates.

Academics, scholars and researchers may apply to visit the School for a period of 1 to 12 months, whether for a short research visit or for an extended stay during sabbatical leave from their own university. The applicant should have a specific research reason to be in Edinburgh, either because of materials available in the University library or because of a research link with a current member of the University staff.

Individuals wishing to be considered as a Visiting Scholar need to obtain the agreement of a member of academic staff within the School to act as their Academic Sponsor. Applicants should make contact by email initially with their contact, from the relevant Subject Area. Once the Academic Sponsor has agreed to host the Visiting Scholar, please complete the application form here:

Submitted applications should ideally outline the following:

  • The prospective dates of their visit to the School.
  • Their ability to comply with UKVI regulations for Academic Visitors.
  • The project they wish to undertake during their visit and the anticipated output of that project.
  • The name of the proposed sponsor within the School.
  • Potential research collaborations and/or research funding initiatives that could be developed during the proposed visit, with academics affiliated to the School, College or wider University.

Applicants must also provide a full Curriculum Vitae which may highlight their publications, academic profile and teaching and research expertise. It is also extremely important for applicants to include a full research plan, detailing the approximate timescale/timetable of what they expect to achieve and when.

The fee structure will be £150 per calendar month, to be paid in full in advance of the agreed visit. Information regarding payment of the fee will be provided once the visit has been approved by the Head of Subject Area and Head of School.

If you are a student currently registered and following a programme of study at an institution elsewhere, you will come under our Visiting Students policy and should contact our Graduate School.

Please note that applicants must be able to meet the UKVI criteria, if appropriate.
