Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival
The inaugural Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival takes place from the 8th to the 12th of October 2014 at the Filmhouse and The University of Edinburgh.
With the support of the University of Edinburgh and the Spanish Government amongst others, the festival brings a varied and exciting programme of 11 contemporary Spanish films and 2 documentaries to Edinburgh alongside Spanish film directors who will introduce some of the screenings.
The Festival opens with In A Foreign Land, the British premiere of a documentary about Spanish immigrants in Edinburgh. Direct from the world premiere of the film at the Saint Sebastian Film Festival Edinburgh based Spanish director Icíar Bollaín will be here to present the three screenings.
The festival includes a programme for Primary and Secondary schools on Wednesday 8th (Primary) with Tad the Lost Explorer and on Thursday and Friday mornings 9th and 10th Secondary screenings of the fiction film 15 Years and a Day followed by a talk Teenagers in Spanish Cinema by Dr Sarah Wright from Royal Holloway University of London which encourages the students to participate. On Friday 10th this will be also followed by a screening of In A Foreign Land.
As part of ESFF Edinburgh University is delighted to welcome the world renowned and famous chef Andoni Luis Aduriz, chef/patron of Mugaritz, the 6th Best Restaurant in the World on Friday,10 th October at 15.30 at 50 George Square . He will introduce the documentary 'Mugaritz BSO' and hold a Q & A session after the screening. This will be followed by a Cocktail Tasting with Brugal Rum! On Friday 11th there will be a double bill of feminist films, the documentary I Decide: The Train of Freedom and romantic comedy Born to Suffer, followed by a talk and open discussion on Women and Sexuality in Society by Dr Bernard Bentley from The University of St. Andrews.
The festival will include talks and Q&A sessions with directors from the Spanish film industry including the 2014 Goya winner Fernando Franco, director of Wounded who will discuss his film following the first screening on Saturday the 11th October. Other film screenings over the festival include The Wishful Thinkers , A Gun in Each Hand and Chinese Take-Away.
