Creative Cultural Careers Festival

Students are being offered a taste of what it is like to work in the creative and cultural sectors at a careers festival.

The week-long series of events - organised by the University’s Career Service - begins on 2 March and is open to all students and recent graduates keen to learn more about a range of creative careers.

An array of lectures, discussions and workshops will take place throughout the central campus, covering a wide variety of careers - from art therapy to computer game designing.

Creative & Cultural Careers Festival2 - 6 March 2015

Varied programme

One event will see key figures in Scotland’s museum and heritage sectors take part in a panel discussion and networking event in Appleton Tower.

Speakers include Director of Heritage Management at Historic Scotland, Loans Manager at National Museum Scotland, Curator at the Museum of Childhood and the Grants Officer at the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Elsewhere, a panel of New Talent BAFTA-winners will deliver a talk on their creative careers since graduating. Speakers will give their hints and tips on what to watch out for and how to get ahead in film, animation and television.

A panel discussion on careers in Journalism also offers students the chance to meet journalists from BBC Arts Television and The Daily Telegraph.

Further events include a talk on Libraries and Archives, a networking afternoon on books and publishing, an event exploring Scotland’s computer game industry and an information session for international students interested in the creative and cultural sectors.

Be your own boss

Don’t miss the final day of the festival (Friday, 6 March) which includes a number of events offering advice for those keen to run their own business.

A morning workshop, The Business of You, will focus on how student and graduates can create a career out of their talent.

Also on Friday, a session will delivered by Launch.ed and the Scottish Institute for Enterprise will cover funding routes and look at the range of competitions out there especially for students and graduates.

At lunchtime there will be a chance to ‘Meet the Experts’ at an open exhibition in David Hume Tower, providing students the opportunity to ask top tips and advice from a range of organisations and successful artists.

This exhibition will be followed by a session by the Art Retail Network giving advice on how students can get their art work spotted.

We have tried to cover as many relevant sectors, industries, professions and crafts as possible in one week. We are delighted with the number of great speakers we have at all the events in the festival and hope this will offer students a real understanding of how to enter these exciting industries.
