James Tait Black Prizes - 100 Years of great writing

Sally Magnusson hosts a celebration of the best works of fiction and biography, in association with the University of Edinburgh. The James Tait Black Prizes are the UK’s longest-running literary prizes - so be sure to come along and watch authors take to the stage to discuss their books!

A new creative writing prize will also be presented to mark the 100th anniversary of the annual prizes and their founder, Janet Coats Black. It will be awarded to the best short story by a matriculated postgraduate student at the University of Edinburgh. The winner will be revealed during the event on Saturday 17th August 2019 at the Spiegeltent.

Paying tribute to a Leith-born sculptor

Pop Art fan? The Pop Art Guru, to be held on 25th August at the Garden Theatre, looks at the work of Eduardo Paolozzi who left an indelible print on his hometown of Edinburgh.

Fascinated by the Leith-born sculptor’s approach of constant reinvention, Scottish poet Christine De Luca and University of Edinburgh academic Carlo Pirozzi (LLC Teaching Fellow), will pay tribute. De Luca and Pirozzi are authors of ‘Paolozzi at Large in Edinburgh’, focused on the pioneer of pop art who worked with everyone from Paul McCartney to Lord Snowdon.

Doing it for themselves

Olja Savičević’s Singer in the Night is an insightful, sensuous and funny exploration of a woman’s recollections of a former lover. Gabriela Cabezón Cámara presents a lively feminist take on epic Martín Fierro in The Adventures of China Iron - which sees the hero’s wife take a road trip through Argentina’s landscape, history and potential future.

LLC’s Iona Macintyre (Senior Lecturer in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies) and Fiona Mackintosh (Senior Lecturer and Co-Head of Section for Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies) worked as co-translators on Cámara’s book.

Part of the Telling Her Story series, Doing it for Themselves will be held 18th August at the Writers’ Retreat.
