From Arthur's Seat - inspired by Edinburgh

Lena Kraus, Editor-in-Chief of Volume Five of our Creative Writing anthology, chats about the joy of leaving university a published writer.

From Arthur's Seat is an annual anthology of new poetry and prose by Creative Writing MSc students in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC).

The anthology aims 'to capture the spirit of each year of the MSc programme, bringing together a class of international voices and fresh, exciting perspectives into one place’.

Lena Kraus is the Editor-in-Chief of this year's anthology, From Arthur's Seat - Volume 5 (Class of 2019-20), heading up a team of over 25 student writers and publishers.

In this short video interview, which she kindly filmed herself during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lena tells us why she feels inspired by Edinburgh and what she’s learned on the MSc programme and through bringing this volume of From Arthur’s Seat to fruition.

I immediately felt inspired to write

Edinburgh is the first UNESCO City of Literature and has a long history of writing and publishing.

Lena first came here a couple of years ago and, as she tells us, "immediately felt inspired to write. There’s something about the city in general… just the atmosphere that I find very encouraging for writing. There is such a history of writing here.”

Commenting on the contemporary literature scene, Lena mentions open-mic nights, launches, and the contacts made through other publications.

She also praises the events co-ordinated by our Writer in Residence, Tracey S. Rosenberg, who runs regular workshops and discussions with visiting speakers from the publishing industry.

Leaving university a published writer

Lena Kraus, MSc Creative Writing student

"It is amazing to come out of a creative writing programme a published writer. I’m so excited to have my work published in this beautiful anthology”, Lena remarks.

"It’s just great to get so much professional experience in addition to the actual writing that we are doing. We have learnt how to produce an anthology to a professional standard and I’m really proud of us as a team for doing that."

As Editor-in-Chief, “I had to learn to delegate and to give people their area of responsibility and trust them… and this was the best possible way to do it because they are all so amazing and they really know what they are doing.”

“It is opportunities like this where you are just given the full responsibility and it’s real because no one is there to pick up your slack that you can grow the most. I think that we have all learnt that it is always worth taking these opportunities and working on them together and really giving them everything.”

"It’s just great to get so much professional experience in addition to the actual writing that we are doing. We have learnt how to produce an anthology to a professional standard and I’m really proud of us as a team for doing that."
