Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies

Taught programmes

Choose from a range of programmes focusing on either area studies training, or a combination of intensive language study with the interdisciplinary exploration of societies and cultures.

Arabic has been taught at the University of Edinburgh for over 260 years, and today our Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies department is globally recognised as a leading centre in the field, with strong links to the Alwaleed Centre.

Our taught Masters programmes offer either focused area studies training, or a combination of intensive language study with the interdisciplinary exploration of societies and cultures.

Regardless of your existing level of expertise, we will strengthen your language and research skills to better analyse and understand the politics, religion and culture of the region from historical and contemporary perspectives.

You’ll be part of an international group of learners involved in seminars, talks, conferences and collaborations, developing the fluency and confidence to operate at the highest professional and academic levels.
