With its numerous cinemas, its international and national film festivals and its wealth of galleries and cultural institutes, the city of Edinburgh has much to offer to students of film, including occasional part-time job opportunities and unpaid internships.
We try and provide opportunities for PhD students to run undergraduate seminars. In year 2 PhD students who have progressed well with their research may be offered teaching experience in the form of tutorials on a number of film-related courses. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that such teaching will always be available.
To complement the careers office’s support and events, Film Studies usually hosts some sessions with professionals (journalists, festival organizers, art house programme officers, editors).
The Edinburgh Film Seminar lecture series also offers excellent opportunities to network in your field.
Edinburgh Film Seminar
You will be encouraged to try your hands at cinema curatorship by organising film screenings and mini-festivals for your fellow students and you may wish to become involved with an academic journal, Forum, edited by our postgraduate students, which publishes pieces on film.
You will be given the opportunity to help with the everyday management of the international academic journal Film-Philosophy. This may involve copyediting, page layout or helping with the organisation of the annual Film-Philosophy Conference.
