Edinburgh Screen Conversations: Gerard Johnson

About this event

Gerard Johnson’s formally daring, boundary-pushing work has established the London-born writer-director as a vital, singular voice in contemporary cinema. His three features – Tony (2009), Hyena (2014) and Muscle (2019) – blend social realism with breathtaking, often unsettling stylisation, leading many critics to make comparisons with the work of Nicolas Winding Refn and Gaspar Noé.

The conversation will take in Gerard’s beginnings in short films, his three acclaimed features, his influences, as well as his work with regular collaborators such as actor Peter Ferdinando and composer Matt Johnson (Gerard’s older brother, and frontman of legendary British post-punk band The The).

About the series

Edinburgh Screen Conversations launched in 2020 with Jonathan Melville and Carol Morley. Hosted by Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh,  the series features a fantastic range of writers, directors and other figures from the screen industries talking to us about their work.
