In this interactive seminar, Prof. Smyth will discuss her research into Hollywood’s Golden Age and, in particular, the extraordinary career of screenwriter Mary McCall (1904 – 1986). As well as working for many of the major studios, McCall was also the first woman president of the Writers Guild of America.
In preparation for the seminar, please read Prof. Smyth’s 2016 article ‘A Woman at the Center of Hollywood's Wars: Screenwriter Mary C. McCall Jr’ in Cinéaste (Summer 2016), pp.18-23. The article is available through DiscoverEd or JStor.

About the speaker
J.E. Smyth is Professor of History at the University of Warwick. Her main interests are women’s employment and representation in Hollywood, historical gangster films, Westerns, Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corp., and the history and practice of screenwriting and editing. Her publications include Nobody’s Girl Friday: The Women Who Ran Hollywood (2018).
