Programme structure

The MSc in Book History and Material Culture consists of two core courses, one course in research methods, two option courses, and a 15,000-word dissertation written under the supervision of a faculty member. Students have the option to complete a credit-bearing work placement as part of their degree.

The programme comprises two core courses "Cultures of the Book" and "Working with Collections", plus an option course in each semester and the Research Methods course. The dissertation is researched and written over the summer.

Core courses

The core course for the MSc in Book History and Material Culture takes place across Semester One and Semester Two.

Option courses

Students will take two option courses, one in each semester.

Research skills and methods

Research Skills and Methods courses run over both semesters.

Work Placement

Optional work placements allow students to take advantage of the exceptional resources in Edinburgh for the study of books in order to gain hands-on experience that will be beneficial in their future careers.

Mini-conference

Each year, students and tutors on the MSc in Book History and Material Culture organize a mini-conference, which takes place on the University campus in May. Students on the MSc present their work in progress in 15-minute conference papers to an audience of post-graduate students and academic staff.

Dissertation

Students submit a 15,000 word dissertation.
