Rationale

The emerging field of ‘linguistic landscape’ studies has gained significant prominence in recent sociolinguistic research. Linguistic landscape research, which is rooted in the study of semiotics, focuses on the analysis of language visibility, the role of language in constructing public spaces and how the display of languages mediates social or political relations.

In spring 2015, an exhibit on ‘Edinburgh’s Linguistic Landscape’ attempted to capture the linguistic dynamics of contemporary Edinburgh with a range of images (48 in all) displaying the use of language in the city, especially in public signage of different kinds. The exhibit was displayed for two weeks in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures and then for two weeks in the Moray House School of Education. Those viewing the exhibit were invited to complete a questionnaire describing their reactions; 85 questionnaires were returned. In addition, three focus group discussions with undergraduate and postgraduate students were conducted.

This study afternoon will introduce the field of linguistic landscape studies, explain its usefulness as a pedagogical tool, and analyse the data collected through the questionnaires and focus group discussions. The audience will also have the opportunity to view the exhibit and give their own reactions.
