Nordic Literature Week in Scotland: Scandinavian Stories & Hygge

About the event

It’s autumn, it’s story time! Take a well-deserved break from assessments (and marking!) to relax and listen to some stories from Scandinavia. We’re taking advantage of having students studying three of the Scandinavian languages at DELC: Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. This means the stories will be read aloud in their original language (with an English translation available) by our students.

Nordic Literature Week is a read aloud event, where the same Nordic literature related to a chosen theme is read out loud at the same time across the Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as other Nordic institutions around the world. The project is managed by The Confederation of Nordic Associations, an NGO that works for Nordic co-operation, and financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

A new theme is chosen every year, along with one children's book, one youth book and one adult book somehow related to that theme. The theme and books are chosen by the Nordic Literature Week's reference group, consisting of one representative from each Nordic country and territory.

The works to be read aloud this year are Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren, Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder and Babette’s Feast by Karen Blixen.

This event is FREE - all staff and students welcome.

About Nordic Literature Week in Scotland

In mid-November, in the Nordic countries (and Scotland too) the sun is definitely spending more time below the horizon than above it. Winter’s well on its way, and it’s a nice time to make yourself cosy and curl up with a book. That’s why it’s Nordic Literature Week!

The goal of Nordic Literature Week is to spread Nordic literature, stimulate the joy of reading and promote solidarity and co-operation in a different and exciting way. At the centre of the project are events where the same Nordic literature related to a chosen theme is read aloud at the same time across the Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as other Nordic institutions around the world.
