Walter Siti

A former university professor and literary critic, Walter Siti is a writer and the recipient of many literary awards, including the Strega Prize and the Mondello Prize (2013).

Walter Siti was born in Modena in 1947 and graduated from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa.

Siti taught at the Universities of Pisa, Calabria and L’Aquila, publishing numerous critical studies on 20th century Italian poetry, including the volumes Il realismo dell’avanguardia (1975) and Il neorealismo nella poesia italiana (1980), both published by Einaudi, and editing for Mondadori’s Meridiani series the complete works of Pier Paolo Pasolini. He has also published with Nottetempo an essay on critical theory, Il realismo è l’impossibile (2013), and with Rizzoli a pamphlet on economics, Pagare o non pagare (2018), and La voce verticale, (2015), a commentary on 57 poems written in many times and places.

As a writer of fiction, Siti has published with Einaudi Scuola di nudo (1994), Un dolore normale (1999), La magnifica merce (2004) and Troppi paradisi (2006); with Mondadori Il contagio (2008) and Autopsia dell’ossessione (2010); with Rizzoli Il canto del diavolo (2009), Resistere non serve a niente (2012), Exit strategy (2014) and Bruciare tutto (2017); and for Einaudi Stile Libero, Bontà (2018). His short stories have appeared in various periodicals and anthologies. His essays and novels have been translated into English, French and Spanish.

Siti was an editor for Granta Italia, and a television reviewer for the Turin newspaper La Stampa.  He has collaborated on screenplays for cinema and theatre, and written for television. He writes book reviews for the daily newspapers La Stampa and Repubblica. For the past three years, he has been teaching creative writing at the Belleville School in Milan.

Walter Siti  is the recipient of various literary awards, the culmination being the Premio Strega and the Premio Mondello for Resistere non serve a niente (Resistance Is Futile) in 2013.
