Edinburgh Gadda Prize

The Edinburgh Gadda Prize is powered by the Edinburgh Gadda Projects. Founded in 2000 to celebrate the Italian Modernist Carlo Emilio Gadda, the Projects have since grown into a formidable network making Edinburgh the premier centre for the promotion of Gadda Studies worldwide.

Building on the Projects’ success, the Prize provides an international platform to recognise scholarly brilliance in Italian Studies while also promoting young creative talent. This is achieved through an exciting combination of scholarly and community projects.

Following Edinburgh 2010 and 2012, Milan 2011, Montecassino and Rome 2013, and Harvard 2015, the Edinburgh Gadda Prize will host its sixth edition – Edinburgh 2019 – to coincide with the centenary of Italian Studies at Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Biennial Conference of the Society for Italian Studies, 26-28 June 2019.

There are two award categories in 2019 – The Crolla Amato Prize (Established Scholars Category) and The Vittoria Group Prize (Early Career Scholars Category) – for scholarly monographs published in English or Italian on any aspect of 20^th and 21^st century Italian culture, and with publication dates between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2018.

The Award Ceremony will take place in the Garden Lobby, Scottish Parliament, Wednesday 26 June 6-8pm, as part of the event Speaking in Cultures. Admission is by Conference Registration.

Admission to Speaking in Cultures

Admission is free, but places had to be reserved by 31 May via our Online Registration.

If your name is not on the Official Guest List you will not be allowed in (sorry!) – sold out event.

Arrival at the Scottish Parliament

Please enter the Scottish Parliament Building through the Visitors’ Entrance.

Security for our event opens at 5:00pm – please arrive in good time to allow for airport-style security. Remember to have your ID with you.

After Security, please go to the Reception Desk, where your name will be checked on the Official Guest List. Once you have cleared both Security and Guest List, you can enjoy visiting the Main Hall. Among other facilities, there is a Cafeteria and a lovely Shop.

You will be looked after by our Parliament Events Team. Once we have the all-clear, you will be ushered through to the Garden Lobby, where our event will start at 6:00 o’ clock sharp. Late comers will not be admitted to the Garden Lobby after 6:10.

We appreciate your collaboration in making this a smooth and fast-flowing process. Do make sure you have enough time to enjoy your visit. The Scottish Parliament Building is a fabulous space.

Calculating Distances to Get There

Getting to the Scottish Parliament in the age of the smart gadgets is easy. Our distance calculator tells us also that it will take you 14 / 19 / 24 minutes to get there from 50 George Square, depending on a fast / medium / slow walking speed, and that you will burn 85 / 75 / 72 calories in the process. Worth a try. Bus connections between the two locations are not that great. Or why not share a cab. The ride costs around £6.
