There are many excellent facilities for our postgraduate students.
We enjoy excellent library provision: Edinburgh has one of Britain’s largest university libraries, which has recently acquired the Karin McPherson Collection of GDR Literature. This is one of the most extensive collections of its kind in the UK and is a superb resource for researchers working on the GDR.
Postgraduates and staff also benefit immensely from the nearby National Library of Scotland, a copyright library with outstanding Germanic holdings.
Graduate School facilities
The Common Room in the Graduate School provides students with a focal point and opportunities to mix with students across the School on a daily basis, while the Gibson Library provides additional study space and reference material within the German section.
The Graduate School is equipped with its own cinema, and an additional audiovisual suite is available in the Languages and Humanities Centre. These facilities are all located on George Square, together with the University Library, and are only two streets away from the National Library of Scotland.
The City of Edinburgh
Cultural facilities in Edinburgh itself are outstanding for those researching in the visual arts, theatre or film.
The Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe provide an opportunity to see the work of world-renowned companies in all areas of the performing arts; leading German directors such as Peter Stein are regular visitors to the Festival.
The International Film Festival showcases German-language films, which also feature regularly in the programmes of the city’s two art-house cinemas.
For those interested in the visual arts, the National Galleries of Scotland have an impressive collection, with particular strengths in Dada and Expressionism.
