The French Play 2019: Les Femmes Savantes

Les Escogriffes, the French Theatre Society at the University of Edinburgh, are proud to present their adaptation of Molière’s classic comedy.

Two young women, Henriette and Clémentine, are in love, but in order to marry, they must overcome an obstacle: the attitude of Henriette's family. While her father and uncle are in favour of the marriage, her father is under the thumb of his wife, Philaminte. And Philaminte, supported by Henriette's aunt and sister, wishes her to marry Trissotine, a "scholar" and mediocre poet with lofty aspirations, who has these three women completely in her thrall. For these three ladies are "learned"; their obsession in life is learning and culture of the most pretentious kind, and Trissotine is their special protégée and the fixture of their literary salon.

'Les Femmes Savantes' will be performed in the Upstairs Theatre at Assembly Roxy on 22nd March 2019 starting at 7:30pm and at Augustine United Church on 23rd March starting at 7:30 pm (doors open at 7pm on both nights).

The play will be in French, but short explanation sheets will be available and the play staged to entertain non-French speakers.

Tickets are available online and in person at the venue (£6, concessions £4).
