DELC Festival of European Theatre 2020 *ALL FORTHCOMING POSTPONED*

Theatre productions have long been a highlight of the social life of the University of Edinburgh.

There are lots of opportunities to get involved in plays and performances as cast or crew.

Each year, many of our students are involved in these plays, sometimes as part of language-focused student theatre societies, such as Les Escogriffes, or in collaboration with staff, visiting playwrights and writers-in-residence in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC).

This year, the teams behind four of the languages plays have come together to run the second DELC Festival of European Theatre.

Around a small, inconspicuous skip outside the back of a supermarket like any other, a small community gathers, shedding light not only on the comedic everyday lives of the residents but also on the waste we produce in today's age. To see a mischievous local nun hiding in the skip, an angry shop owner and his posse of workers have Brussels sprouts thrown at them and a confused woman's struggle to find some tea and shortbread, join the German Play Society from Edinburgh University!

The play will be in German, also sei dabei!

Pinocchio

Students from Italian Studies, University of Edinburgh, are delighted to present a new Italian Play inspired by The Adventures of Pinocchio (1883) by Carlo Collodi (1826-1890).

We invited students to develop their own versions of Pinocchio’s famous story, to imagine why the puppet wants so desperately to become a child, and what it means for them to grow up, allowing these reflections to inform their acting.

The play proudly features a special collaboration with students and teachers from Holy Rood RC High School in Edinburgh, who will perform live music and songs.

The play will be in Italian and English.

La Historia de una Escalera

The play will be in Spanish.

Dom Juan - Les Escogriffes

The story follows Dom Juan, a libertine, a seducer of women and an atheist. He is accompanied throughout the play by his valet, Sgnanarelle, an aggressive, cowardly and greedy individual. Dom Juan’s multi-faceted personality and womanising ways are exposed throughout the play. Will Dom Juan seize the opportunity for reformation or will he be punished?

The play is performed by Les Escogriffes, Edinburgh University’s French Theatre Society. The society was established in 1969 and is comprised of students from the University of Edinburgh. Every year the society performs a French language play which is directed, organised and performed by students. The play forms part of the Department of European Languages and Culture’s Festival of European Theatre.

L’histoire suit Dom Juan, un séducteur et athée. Il est accompagné tout du long par son valet Sganarelle, un homme agressif, lâche et avare. Sa personnalité à multiples facettes et ses habitudes de coureur de jupons sont révélées au grand jour tout au long de la pièce. Dom Juan va-t-il choisir de se reconvertir ou sera-t-il châtié?

La pièce est interprétée par Les Escogriffes, L’Association de Théâtre Français d’Université d’Édimbourg. L’association a été fondée en 1969 et est constituée par des étudiants de l’Université. Chaque année l’association interprète une pièce en français qui est mise en scène, organisée et interprétée par des étudiants. La pièce fait partie de ‘Department of European Language and Culture’s Festival of European Theatre’.
