DELC Festive Showcase

Open to everyone in European Languages and Cultures (DELC), these events bring staff and students together to celebrate languages and cultures from around Europe.

Unless otherwise stated (below), events are free and take place in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC), 50 George Square, Edinburgh EH8 9LH.

Allsång, Abba och annat! 

Join Scandinavian Studies for a traditional Nordic singalong, some ABBA karaoke, and a glass of wine.

Witchcraft and Society in Early Modern Russia

A talk by Professor Val Kivelson on why witchcraft and magical spells provide all the answers to early modern Russian history.

Launch of BABBLE issue two

Come and join us for a look at the second issue of DELC’s Creative Writing magazine and a chat over drinks and nibbles.

Wednesday 28th November 2018 (2-4pm)

Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS) Christmas get together

Join us for an exhibition of student work on 'The History of Words in the Spanish-Speaking world' and delicious Spanish and Portuguese Christmas food: cod fishcakes, pastel de nata and a glass of sherry!

'Vmayakovsky' (+ discussion)

A screening of Alexander Shein's much-discussed film about Mayakovsky, and discussion with Dr James Rann (University of Glasgow), as part of Russian Film Week Scotland.

Tickets cost £8/£5 and can be purchased via Eventbrite in advance, or in cash on the door.

Princess Dashkova, the Woman Who Shook the World

Experience the extraordinary life of Princess Ekaterina Dashkova in a costumed extravaganza of eighteenth-century gossip, politics, poetry, and music. With Russian tea and cakes!

'The Story of One Appointment'

A Russian Film Week Scotland screening of Avdotya Smirnova's 2018 film about an event involving the famous writer Count Leo Tolstoy.

Thursday 6th December 2018 (5-8pm)

Italian tombolata 

Join the Italian team for 'tombolata' with panettone, prosecco, and fruit juice.

French ‘Galette de Rois’ event

Come and taste a typical French delicacy, have some tea/coffee, and perhaps be crowned king/queen for the day.

Taste and judge a fine array of German goodies baked by students and staff of German.

Edinburgh is ranked fourth in the UK, and 19th in the world, for modern languages in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018. We teach nine European languages to degree level, and courses in Nynorsk, Old Norse, Basque, Catalan and Icelandic. We also offer a range of postgraduate programmes, both taught and research-led.
