‘Can do’ statements

The following descriptors provide an indication of the passive and productive abilities of students passing this course. 

Students passing at grade: Will meet these criteria:
A almost all of the time
B most of the time
C regularly
D some of the time

Listening Comprehension

  • Understand simple information and questions about family, people, homes, work and hobbies.
  • Understand clear and simple messages on the TV, at the airport, and in conversation provided people talk very clearly
  • Understand what people say in simple, everyday conversation, if they speak clearly and give help.

Reading Comprehension

  • Understand short, simple texts containing familiar vocabulary
  • Find the most important information in advertisements, information leaflets, web pages, catalogues, timetables etc.
  • Understand the main points in short, simple news items and descriptions if the subject is familiar.
  • Understand the main points in short, simple everyday stories, especially if there is visual support

Spoken

  • Start a conversation, explain when something is not understood and ask simply for clarification.
  • Ask people how they feel in different situations, eg about his/her home and country, work and free time, likes and dislikes, including simple questions about past events.
  • Discuss plans with other people, eg. where to go and when to meet.
  • Communicate in everyday situations, eg. ordering food and drink, shopping, using banks, post offices and public transport.

Written

  • Write about him/herself using simple language, eg. information about his/her family, his/her courses, job, hobbies etc.
  • Write about things and people he/she knows well using simple language, eg. descriptions of friends or what happened during that day.
  • Complete a questionnaire with information about his/her educational background, job, interests and skills.
  • Write simple messages, eg. to make or change and invitation or appointment, or to friend, eg. via e-mail, sms or postcard to give them personal news or to ask a question.
