Department of European Languages and Cultures

About us

Welcome to the Department of European Languages and Cultures (DELC), a stimulating environment for language study helping Edinburgh rank 17th for Modern Languages in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019.

We offer a very broad range of languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish are taught across all four years of our degree programmes, with credit bearing courses also available at honours level in Nynorsk and Old Norse, and at pre-honours level in Basque and Catalan.

Our MA (Hons) degrees take four years, with the majority offering the option in the first year to study an outside subject. This adds an extra dimension to our studies and provides excellent breadth as well as depth. The choice of outside subject can be taken from either within or outside of the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC).

Most of the languages we offer can be started with no prior knowledge. We offer a range of opportunities for studying abroad as an integral part of students’ studies across the School, and it is compulsory for students of DELC to spend the third year abroad.
