Experience the extraordinary life of Princess Ekaterina Dashkova in a costumed extravaganza of eighteenth-century gossip, politics, poetry, and music.

She shook the world when she rode out in a soldier’s uniform at the side of the future Catherine the Great to help dethrone the Tsar.

She shook the world again when Catherine appointed her head of the Russian Academy of Sciences – the first woman in history to hold such a role.

She certainly shook up Britain when she brought her son to obtain the finest Enlightenment education at the University of Edinburgh.

You will hear from Catherine the Great, Horace Walpole, Frederick the Great, Diderot, Voltaire, Garrick, Benjamin Franklin, William Robertson, Derzhavin, Alexander Herzen, modern-day poets Elena Shvarts and Novella Matveeva… and many others.

You will listen to one of Dashkova’s own compositions, performed on St Cecilia’s eighteenth-century organ – in a concert hall Dashkova herself would have frequented during her stay in Edinburgh.
