Entering 3rd Year

A step-by-step guide to entering your third year of study in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures.

Progression

Please ensure you check your progression status. This confirms whether you have satisfied the requirements of your degree in order to progress into your third year.

If you have undertaken any additional (resit) assessments, your progression status will be sent to you via an automated email containing a direct link to the relevant information by noon on Friday 11th September 2020.

If there are problems, such as missing credits or other issues, your Personal Tutor and the LLC Student Support Office will be able to provide advice on the options open to you.

Course enrolment

Each degree has its own Degree Programme Table (DPT), which sets out your compulsory courses, those which are optional, and those which can be chosen as an outside subject.

It is important that you familiarise yourself with your DPT so that you know exactly what you must and can study in each year.

Your Degree Programme Table can be accessed through the University of Edinburgh's Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study (DRPS) pages, or through the interactive tool, Path. Please note that Path requires a log-in, so make sure to have your MyEd username and password ready if you want to use this service.

Administrative staff in the Teaching Office will enrol you in courses by the start of Semester One.

Please check your record and consult the relevant member of staff if you discover a problem.

Confirmation of attendance

Before meeting with your Personal Tutor, you should have completed the Annual Registration process online.  You can access this via MyEd by clicking onto the following tabs on the MyEd homepage: Accounts> Progression > My student record. This process will ensure the University of Edinburgh is aware of your location and method of study (i.e. on or off campus).

When you meet with your Personal Tutor, he or she will confirm that you have started your studiesThis is a formal part of the matriculation process, so failure to meet with your PT may affect your student record. Please note that during Semester 1, meetings with your PT will take place digitally (for example, via Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Skype). We strongly recommend you aim to meet with your Personal Tutor by the end of Week 2 (week commencing 28th September 2020). Your PT will contact you to invite you to arrange an appointment. Please note that in Welcome Week and Week 1 priority for appointments may be given to students in the pre-honours years (Years 1 and 2).

At this first meeting of the year, and over the course of the year, your Personal Tutor can offer academic guidance and support including:

  • reviewing your academic progress
  • helping you reflect on the ways in which learning can help you in your future development
  • fostering your sense of belonging to a supportive community of learners
  • addressing any concerns or problems that might affect your studies

You’ll also have online tools to make notes on your progress and discussions to reflect on advice and feedback from staff.

Your timetable

Your personalised timetable will show your tutorial hours via Office 365 calendars, enabling you to easily add information to your phone, computer or other devices.

Tutorial hours will normally be allocated by the end of the first week of teaching.

If you wish to change tutorial group, you will need to use the ‘Group Change Request’ form.  Please note that you should only use the form to request a timetable change after you have already been allocated to a timetabled tutorial group for the relevant course.

Teaching and learning

For the 2020-2021 academic year, we will be delivering our teaching on a hybrid basis. This means some of your classes and teaching will take place in-person, on our campuses, and some will be delivered digitally.

While most of our lectures will be delivered digitally in Semester 1, we will offer other elements - such as tutorials - in-person wherever possible. This means that we will have a number of buildings open for use, while following the latest physical distancing guidelines, and will continue to increase our on-campus provision as Covid-19 restrictions ease.

It is only if you cannot safely travel (back) to Edinburgh for the start of Semester that we will use technology alone to teach and support you until you are able to rejoin us.

Group meetings and peer support

As well as one-to-one meetings with your Personal Tutor, we'll help you to engage with the wider student community through a series of group meetings based around your subject area or programme of study.

We also have several active Peer Support schemes which enable students to provide academic and social support for each other during their studies.
