My career took me from Glasgow (1964), to Cambridge (1966), Clermont-Ferrand (1970-71, 72-74), the New University of Ulster (Chair of French, 1974-80), and finally to Edinburgh where I occupied the John Orr Chair of French for 26 years (1980-2006). Though I am essentially a specialist of the French Enlightenment with special reference to Voltaire (I have been a member of the Editorial Board of the Œuvres complètes since 1997), I have for long worked actively in the field of the History of the Book, and more particularly on the interpretation of XVIIIth century library catalogues (3 critical editions and 5 articles).
