Professor Emeritus Charles W. J. Withers

Professor Emeritus Charles W. J. Withers is the former Ogilvie Chair of Human Geography at the University of Edinburgh.

His research interests have centred on the historical geography of science, in the Enlightenment and in the nineteenth century, in travel and exploration, the history of cartography, and the history of the book. Amongst other publications, he is co-editor, with Miles Ogborn, of Geographies of the Book (Ashgate, 2010), and co-author, with Innes Keighren and Bill Bell, of Travels into Print: Exploration, Writing and Publishing with John Murray 1773-1859 (Chicago, 2015).  In September 2015, the Royal Scottish Geographical Society appointed Withers the first Geographer Royal for Scotland in 118 years.
