Dr Murray Simpson spent most of his career as a librarian at Edinburgh University Library, ultimately becoming in 1995 Special Collections Librarian. In 1999 he became Director of Special Collections [i.e. Rare Books, Manuscripts, Maps and Music] in the National Library of Scotland and in 2003, following a restructuring, became Manager of Manuscript Collections there. He retired in 2008. Since then he has been doing some ad hoc valuation work for an Edinburgh auction house, and in 2011 became Honorary Libraries Adviser to the National Trust for Scotland. His scholarly interests are in the history of book collecting in Scotland, about aspects of which he has published various articles and essays.
