I studied English at Glasgow University and did a PhD in seventeenth-century diaries at Leeds. My first academic jobs were in Krakow, Poland and since 2001 I've worked at the English department of Strathclyde University.

I have written two books on the history of reading between 1650 and 1750. Both draw on my background in linguistics and on more recent interests in the anthropology of verbal art. I am now working on cognitive approaches to the experience of reading or hearing verbal art.
