CHB Annual Public Lecture: Alexander McCall Smith *POSTPONED*

Please note that, in the interests of audience and speaker wellbeing during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, we have postponed this event until further notice.

The Centre for the History of the Book (CHB) at the University of Edinburgh is proud to announce its 2020 Public Lecture.

Alexander McCall Smith is one of the world’s most prolific and best-loved authors. His No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series has sold over twenty million copies in the English language alone, and his books have been translated into more than forty languages. Whether writing for adults or children, about Botswana, Edinburgh or Sweden, he brings his characters to life with warmth and wit. In 2007 he received a CBE for services to literature and in 2011 was honoured by the President of Botswana for services through literature to the country.

Alexander McCall Smith joins Tom Mole, Director of the Centre for the History of the Book, to talk about the many forms his writing has taken, and his enduring fascination with books and reading.

Established in 1995, the Centre for the History of the Book (CHB) promotes research into the production, circulation and reception of published material, from manuscripts to electronic texts.

Led by Professor Tom Mole, winner of the Saltire Literary Awards 2018 'Research Book of the Year' for his book 'What the Victorians Made of Romanticism', it is based in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) at the University of Edinburgh.

The CHB Annual Public Lecture is one of a range of activities organised by the Centre to bring together staff and students interested in the history of the book as a material object, in all its forms. Previous speakers include Kathleen Jamie and Alberto Manguel.

The Centre's one-year taught masters programme, Book History and Material Culture, brings together theory and practice in new and innovative ways and is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.
