Rashid al-Din

This unique exhibition highlights the Jami‘ al-Tawarikh (“World History” or “Compendium of Chronicles”) of Rashid al-Din, one of the masterpieces of medieval Islamic manuscripts. Celebrating the 700th anniversary of its production (1314/2014), the exhibition features 17 folios from the Edinburgh University Library’s manuscript (Or.MS.20), complemented by loans relating to the material culture of fourteenth-century Iran from the National Museum of Scotland. The 1314 Arabic copy of the Jami‘ al-Tawarikh featured in the exhibition represents a history of the world as it was then known and offers a fascinating insight into the multi-cultural, multi-religious society of the Islamic Iranian world under the Mongols.

Curated and organised by the Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World and the Centre for Research Collections, both at the University of Edinburgh.
