Dr Thomas Serres

Thomas Serres is an IMERA-Alwaleed Fellow, a lecturer in the Politics department at UCSC and a specialist of North African politics.

His first book is entitled "Algeria and the Suspended Disaster: Governance by Catastrophization under Bouteflika" and was published in 2019 with Karthala.  He has also co-edited a volume entitled "North Africa and the Making of Europe: Governance, Institutions and Culture" that was published in 2018 with Bloomsbury University Press. In addition, he has also published several articles in peer-reviewed academic journals and is a co-editor for the Maghreb page at Jadaliyya.

In his new project, Thomas studies the role of transnational actors in the remaking of sovereignty in the Western Mediterranean, notably regarding contentious political questions such as undocumented migration, human rights, terrorism and regime change. This research analyzes the spatial and political strategies of bi-national actors and expatriated political opponents travelling between France, Tunisia and Algeria. It also examines the role of former Islamist activists living in Europe and their involvement in transnational networks dedicated to the defense of human rights and the promotion of democracy.
