Edinburgh Summer School 2024

Summer in the City - Rainy Days

We explore some of the best ways to spend your time in Edinburgh on rainy summer days.

Ok, we’re not going to lie, the sun doesn’t always shine in Edinburgh in the summertime. But of course we are very prepared for that and there is loads to do when it gets a bit ‘driech’.

And as the old saying goes, the best things in life are free… and that’s certainly true in the case of many of Edinburgh’s museums and galleries.

Yes that’s right…free entry, no strings attached.

So if the weather does take a turn for the worst and you fancy a fun day out that includes history, culture and adventure all in one, then we’d recommend you check out one, or more, of the many excellent museums in Edinburgh.

Top of our list has to be the National Museum of Scotland where you can explore the diversity of the natural world, world cultures, art and design, science and technology and Scottish history, all in one amazing building.

And to help you make the most of your visit, you can take one of the museums self-guided trails – amongst others you can choose from the LGBTQIA + Hidden Histories Trail, the Wellbeing Trail or the Architecture Trail.

On The Mound, in the heart of the city, is the Scottish National Gallery which is home to one of the best collections of fine art in the world. And just 5 minutes’ walk from there is the Scottish National Portrait Gallery where you’ll come face to face with the people who shape Scotland’s past, present and future.

Of course, this is just a glimpse of the culture that Edinburgh has to offer.

To see it is really to believe it and so we hope to welcome you here for the 2022 University of Edinburgh Summer School and help you to discover what you love most about our city in the summer.
