Summer in the City - Portobello Beach

We continue to explore the best ways to spend summer days in Edinburgh… and this time, we’re taking a trip to the seaside!

Edinburgh is not just about cobbled streets, ancient volcanos and open green spaces… we also have beaches… and our favourite has to be Portobello!

Portobello Beach, a few miles from the city centre is a charming seaside suburb, with two miles of sand making it perfect for wild swimming, walking and, well, just chilling. Look out also for the stunning Victorian swimming pool situated right on the promenade, which features an original Turkish baths.

The beach draws crowds when the sun shines, but no matter the weather, there will always be a warm welcome waiting for you in the number of cafes and bars on the prom or the independent restaurants on the high street.

If pizza is your thing, you can grab a deck chair and enjoy some of the best in Edinburgh at Civerinos Prom Slice or if you’d prefer to taste the best of Scottish seafood then we’d highly recommend Shrimp Wreck.

What’s more, Portobello’s Georgian and Victorian architecture is protected within the conservation area and there are a number of attractive parks to enjoy (if you need a break from feeling the sand between your toes). In fact Portobello was voted the best neighbourhood in the UK and Ireland at the Urbanism Awards in 2020.

An independent town until 1896, Portobello has kept its unique character and sense of identity, making a trip to Edinburgh’s Seaside an essential part of your visit.
