Former COL Student Receives Jazz Awards Nomination
Fraser Urquhart nominated for Rising Star Award.
Fraser Urquhart studied on the Credit for Entry programme at the Centre for Open Learning before obtaining his place on a music degree at the University of Edinburgh. He has recently been nominated for the Rising Star Award at the Scottish Jazz Awards 2017.
Credit for Entry offers a flexible, part-time opportunity to gain the academic requirements for entry to degrees in humanities and social science subjects. We asked Fraser his thoughts on studying at the Centre for Open Learning:
Why did you decide to study at the Centre for Open Learning?
“I studied at the Centre for Open Learning because I heard it was a brilliant way of getting back into education. I wanted to study music at Edinburgh University and this was the perfect way to start the process instead of doing a college qualification.”
How did the Centre for Open Learning help you prepare for degree study at the University of Edinburgh?
“The experience of Credit for Entry was invaluable for me as it prepared me for essay writing and gave me great study techniques I have already put into practise in first year of my music degree. I now get to learn everyday about my favourite subject while pursuing my jazz performance career simultaneously.”
What was the main benefit of studying at the Centre for Open Learning?
"I’ll never forget the year at the COL because it provided, above all, an encouraging environment for all the adult returners."
