The NC3Rs was established to “accelerate advances in replacing, reducing and refining the use of animals in research and testing”. They do this by funding research, supporting innovation and engaging with industry. They also fund and train early career researchers as well as providing tools and training for researchers at all stages to improve reproducibility.

Professor Abbott has been appointed to the NC3Rs Board for the next 3 years following a competitive recruitment process. The NC3Rs Board consists of scientific experts and animal welfare professionals. The Board’s role is to guide strategy and plan activity to achieve the NC3Rs objectives.

Cathy Abbott is Professor of Mammalian Molecular Genetics and a Group Leader at CGEM. Her work focuses on the translation elongation factor eEF1A2 and its role in neurological disorders. She has chaired the University of Edinburgh’s Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB) for the last 5 years and previously served on Grants and Training Fellowships panels for the NC3Rs.

Prof Cathy Abbott…has an exemplary record of putting the 3Rs into practice across four decades of neuroscience research
