Promotions at CGEM: Dr Pete Bankhead
Congratulations to Dr Pete Bankhead on being promoted to Reader
Dr Pete Bankhead was recently promoted to Reader. His research programme focuses on bioimage analysis and digital pathology: developing new and practical approaches to analyse microscopy data and whole slide scans of tissue.
Among his achievements, Dr Bankhead created QuPath: an open-source software platform for digital pathology and bioimage analysis. QuPath is now established as one of the most popular and widely-used bioimage analysis software applications worldwide (>250,000 downloads and >1500 citations to date).
Dr Bankhead continues to lead the QuPath project, and was recently awarded funding twice under CZI's ‘Essential Open Source Software for Science’ scheme, in addition to a 5-year Wellcome Trust Technology Development Grant. He is also a member of the management team for CLIRPath-AI, an EPSRC funded Network focussing on spectroscopy, digital pathology, and artificial intelligence.
Beyond developing new computational methods and tools, Dr Bankhead has a special interest in training other scientists and making image analysis more accessible. He has authored a popular open and interactive textbook that explains the main concepts of image analysis to biologists (link below).
