"So you want to be a biomedical scientist?” - Career Exploration Day

IGMM event enables local high school pupils to meet biomedical science students, researchers and clinicians: November 2015

The inaugural “So you want to be a biomedical scientist?” career exploration day took place at the MRC Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine at the University of Edinburgh (IGMM) on the 16th October.

The event enabled local high school pupils to meet biomedical science undergraduate students, postgraduate students, researchers and clinicians.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students gave insights into student life and course options, whilst researchers – including Professor Wendy Bickmore, Director of the MRC Human Genetics Unit - highlighted a wide variety of biomedical career paths including genetic research, epidemiology, medicinal chemistry, bioinformatics, clinical research and surgery.

Attendees “really enjoyed it, especially chatting to the students”, found the event“extremely informative and helpful” and felt “it was good because there were many people from different backgrounds”.

The IGMM will now run the careers event annually, as part of the Institute’s public engagement programme.
