Compulsory supervisor briefings

All new supervisors are required to attend a supervisor briefing. Continuing supervisors should renew these every five years.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

The Institute for Academic Development office is currently closed to in-person events and enquirers. We are still working remotely, and will continue to run online events and provide digital-based support and information for staff and students.

Update May 21: The IAD will continue to run most of our events and workshops online as we move into the new academic year.  Online events have been popular with staff and students, more convenient and easier to fit in with other constraints and time demands.  We will also begin to run events on campus as soon as it is safe to do so and when room capacity is available.  Looking to the future we will offer a mix of online and on-campus opportunities to staff and students.

These are run by the Colleges and Schools in partnership with IAD. You can find a list of these with dates and booking links here.

Given the current Covid-19 situation, the Senate Education committee has agreed that completion of the Fundamentals of PhD Supervision online course fulfils the training obligation for supervisors, in lieu of the usual face to face briefings. Your College or School may also run an online briefing to complement this course. The training provision and requirements will be reviewed again in the next academic year
