Courses for online tutors

Who can take part in these courses?

  • current online tutors at the University of Edinburgh
  • people who will be online tutors at the University of Edinburgh soon
  • these courses will be most valuable if you have already started in your specific teaching role or if you are starting soon and have a good idea of the context in which you will be working

Booking: these courses generally open for booking one month in advance of the shown date. If you do not see a live booking link please check back nearer the course date.

Cancelling: If you need to cancel your booking, please do so at your earliest opportunity and at least 3 days before the event. Someone else may be able to take your place, but we need time to contact them. Also, although you are not charged for an event, there are costs we incur (e.g. photocopying) which relate directly to places reserved.

How to cancel: you can cancel your booking via the MyEd Event Booking Channel. Go to MyEd and then the Event Booking Channel. Click on "My Bookings" - here you will have the option to cancel your place.

We maintain attendance registers; unexpected absences will be noted. If you consistently fail to attend, or repeatedly cancel with very short notice, you may be prevented from booking future IAD events.

An Introduction to Online Tutoring

This workshop is aimed at tutors who are new to tutoring online and have limited experience of teaching in online environments. The workshop will provide an brief overview of digital pedagogy by introducing some models which should help tutors support their students during online sessions. The workshop aims to support tutors understand how to create an engaging environment which will help motivate students to participate in online activities.

Developing as an online tutor

This workshop is aimed at those who have some experience of teaching online. It will explore tutoring in a changing digital environment where increasingly courses are designed to be flexible and incorporate aspects of blended and hybrid learning. During the workshop you will explore what it means to tutor in blended or hybrid environments and consider what student engagement might look like in blended and hybrid environments.
