Definitions and expectations

What we mean by assessment, and minimum expectations that we must ensure we meet.

What constitutes assessment?

Assessment is defined by the Quality Assurance Agency as:

'any processes that appraises an individual's knowledge, understanding, abilities or skills'

These include but are not limited to:

  • Essays
  • Examinations
  • ‘Take-home tests / exams’
  • Presentations
  • Projects
  • Dissertations
  • Tutorial Participation

Minimum expectations

We must ensure that,

“Assessment is designed in a way that meets the needs of all students at every stage of the assessment process, including those studying at different locations and through online arrangements, and those who possess one or more protected characteristics”

Assessment is hugely important to students and their progress, but it can also be very stressful.

It is important that students know the structure, broad content and timings of their assessments as far in advance as possible and have time and opportunity to practice for their method of assessment.
