Independent learning

How do I encourage my students to develop as independent learners?

Understand learning at university

Ask new undergraduate students to identify the differences between university and other kinds of studying.

Encourage them to look at resources available on the University's new students website:

Resources to help you transition to University study

New postgraduates may find the range of online factsheets and resources on learning-related topics and succeeding as a postgraduate student useful:

Online resources for postgraduate students

Recognise personal preferences

As students progress through their course, encourage them to reflect on how they approach different learning, teaching and assessment activities, such as lectures, labs, exams and seminars. It can be helpful to tell them about things that have worked for you in the past, or for other students you know of, while acknowledging that their strategies may be different.

Make sure students are aware of resources that are available and remind them to talk to other students about what works for them.
