Abstract

One of the challenges for widening participation students is the transition from secondary and further education to higher education. The support these students receive at the very beginning of their journey may influence the successful outcome of their degree.

The aim of this project is to provide support, resources for students undertaking studies at the School of Chemistry to enable successful transition to the university by providing educational culture, pastoral support, and raise careers aspirations for students from a range of disadvantaged backgrounds.

We intend to do this by developing an on-line course, which is aimed to be completed by offer holders prior to Year 1 or Direct Entry into Year 2 Semester 1 candidates. This course will encompass two streams of information on (Course 1) ‘How to Uni’ and ‘Chemistry and Maths basics’ (Course 2).

The project involves the hiring of Chief Tutorial Scholar from the School of Chemistry to work on streamlining course content and recruiting current students to take part in the focus group. This focuses on positive induction of early and continued engagement across the student development, promoting positive student experiences through the academic and social aspects of transitioning into the University.
